Shifting of TB hospital

SHILLONG: Failing to acquire land for re-location of the Reid Chest (TB) Hospital from its present location at Jhalupara, the State Health department has now sought the help of the Urban Affairs department.

The need to shift the TB Hospital from Jhalupara arose after the State Government decided to construct the upcoming Shillong Medical College there.

Talking to The Shillong Times here on Sunday, Deputy Chief Minister and in charge Health, Rowell Lyngdoh, said that his department has requested the Urban Affairs to allot land to shift the TB Hospital.

“Since the Urban Affairs department is acquiring land in Mawdiandiang (Greater Shillong) area, they can allot some acres of land to the Health department for shifting the TB hospital,” he added.

It may be reminded that the Health department had, earlier, identified a plot of land near the Pasteur Institute for shifting the TB Hospital, but the land was later found to be too small for the purpose.

“Once we get the land we will immediately draw up plans for shifting of the TB Hospital,” Lyngdoh said.

Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma had, earlier, announced that the proposed Shillong Medical College is expected to enroll the first batch of MBBS students in 2017.

The proposed Medical College would have around three hundred beds for super speciality treatment and is expected to cater to around 2,40,000 people in the Out Patient Department (OPD) annually.
