Kolkata: Late charge from Prayag United SC forced struggling Mumbai FC to surrender 3-2 at the 116th IFA Shield in Group D’s crucial play at Yuba Bharati Krirangam (Salt Lake Stadium) here on Wednesday.
Khalid Jamil’s side went ahead by a powerful header from Gbeneme Friday in the 24th minute (1-0), which was levelled by Prayag midfielder Denson Devadas’ header in the 70th minute.
Seven minutes later Yusif Yakubu gave the lead to Prayag, also from header of Deepak Mondal’s free kick, but the advantage evaporated three minutes later when a right-footer from Malswam Kima beat Prayag custodian Abhijit Mondal.
The winning goal for local side came three minutes from end when Man of the Match Yakubu latched onto a pass from Momammed Rafique and beat Mumbai FC keeper Sanjiban Ghosh by a flicker to give Sanjay Sen’s side full three points in the opener.
The defeat meant exit for Mumbai outfit as they grabbed only one point by 1-1 draw in the first game against Techno Aryan Club.
Now group’s semifinalist will be known in the deciding play between Prayag and Aryan on March 10.
The win for Prayag United was also a fitting reply to the rivals as they were beaten by Mumbai FC 1-3 in first leg of I-League play.
Mumbai FC were unlucky not to get a goal when a powerful curler from Cavin Lobo rattled the post in the 75th minute.
Coach Sanjay Sen did good job introducing fresh legs with Jayanta Sen, Jaychandra Singh and Keyne Vincent, who added stings to the attacks.
Thursday being Holi there will be no match. (UNI)
