Chennai: Directorate of Revenue Intelligene (DRI) Additional Director General C Rajan and his car driver were today arrested by the CBI on charges of accepting bribe of Rs 2 lakh and an I-pod.
CBI sources said acting on complaint from F Udaibudllah, who sought defreezing of the accounts of his friend for which Rajan demanded a bribe, CBI arrested Rajan and his driver, Murugesan.
Mr Rajan, who had served as the Chennai Airport Customs Commissioner and also in Tuticorin Port and his driver were produced before a CBI Court and remanded in judicial custody till March 21.
They were later lodged in Puzhal Central Prison.
Later, CBI raided the residences and office premises of Rajan and Peel Jamal, who acted as a conduit of Rajan and the houses of Murugesan and seized incriminating documents.
The searches also revealed existence of a safe deposit locker operated by Rajan, bank balances totalling Rs 32 lakh and fixed deposits of Rs 11 lakh.
These accounts were frozen.
Detailing the arrest, CBI sources said Ubaidullah lodged a complaint with the CBI Superintendent on March five stating that DRI had searched the premises of his friend Joseph and seized cheque leaves of Superking Myatzin, a Burmese National of Indian Origin and froze his two bank accounts.
Myatzin was said to be a businessman involved in import of electronic goods and computer parts from abroad. (UNI)
