Guwahati: Assam police on Thursday apprehended an ‘area commander’ of the outlawed Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) with arms from Nine Mile area in Guwahati along Assam-Meghalaya border.
A senior police official informed that the GNLA cadre was identified as Rinphu Sangma who is an important cadre of the outfit. One pistol with live ammunition, three mobile handsets with SIM cards and Rs 57,000 in cash were recovered from his possession, the police official said.
Rinphu hails from West Garo Hills district of Meghalaya.
“Rinphu is the area commander of GNLA based in Mendipathar area in Garo Hills. Today we have arrested him when he had come to meet his wife in Nine Mile area,” said the police.
A team of Meghalaya police have already arrived in Guwahati in connection with the arrest of the GNLA cadre.
Two linkmen and two drivers were also with the GNLA cadre during the time of his arrest by Assam Police.
