Lawlessness-the order of the day

NONGPOH: Lawlessness might soon be the order of the day in the second youngest district of the State if acts of hooliganism and vandalism committed by members of youth bodies are unpunished while victims of such acts continue to nurture the wound caused by such acts for the rest of their lives.

Last year, during the night road blockades called by a group of youth organization demanding the construction of 4 Lanes from Umsning bye pass, a number of vehicles were damaged as these vehicles which were probably stuck somewhere in Shillong or Guwahati due to traffic jams decided to go ahead after the road blockade was enforced.

More than 20 vehicles were damaged by pelting of stones and pebbles by the youth body organizations. Those travelling in these damaged vehicles were left traumatized.

Many questioned does the National Highway belong to the youth body organizations that the people have to follow their diktat all the time. The answer is no then why does the State Government shy away from taking stringent action against such group of people. The owners of the damaged vehicles have to bear the loss.

But till date nobody responsible for the damage has been arrested and will never be arrested for reason best known to the State Government. So again where is the law of the land?

In the recent incident at Rajabagan, the victims have lost their means of livelihood but the culprits responsible for such massacre are roaming scot free. Will the culprits ever be behind bars and punish as per law of the land?

Besides these there are numerous instances when the lives of the people were held to ransom by these youth body organizations. But again no one was punished for the crimes committed during such agitational programmes.

A cross section of law abiding citizens said, “if the State Government always shies away from taking stern action and punish these law breakers then it would send a wrong signal to our children.
