Shillong Medical College

SHILLONG: The State Government has reiterated that forty per cent of the seats of the proposed Shillong Medical College will be kept in reserve for students of the State.
Replying to queries tabled by Paul Lyngdoh (UDP) and Manas Chaudhuri (Independent), Deputy Chief Minister and in charge Health and Family Welfare Rowell Lyngdoh informed the House on Tuesday that the PPP agreement on the proposed medical college was yet to be finalized.
It may be mentioned that the State Government had signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the International Finance Corporation last year to set up the proposed medical college on the PPP mode.
The proposed medical college would have the intake of hundred students.
The State Government plans to construct the medical college in the Reid Chest (TB) Hospital. The Health and Family Welfare department has asked MUDA to provide a 20 acre land in New Shillong Township, Mawdiangdiang to shift the patients of TB Hospital permanently.
Lyngdoh said the private party would like invest in the proposed medical college if it is set up within the city.
The proposed Medical College is expected to have around three hundred beds and is expected to cater to around 2,40,000 people in the Out Patient Department (OPD) annually.
It may be mentioned that the State Cabinet earlier this year approved the bidding document for the construction of the institute.
Simsang bridge: PWD Minister HDR Lyngdoh on Tuesday informed the House that the five piers and two abutments of Simsang bridge over river Warimagre have been completed.
Replying to a query of Marcuise N Marak, Lyngdoh said out of the 18 prestressed girders 15 have been completed.
Model schools: The Centre has approved the State government’s proposal to set up model schools in West, East and South Garo Hills.
Informing this in the Assembly on Tuesday, Education minister RC Laloo said a few locations for the proposed model schools have been identifies and they are Samanda, Kherapara.
The minister was responding to a query of Marcuise N Marak.
When asked by the Nartiang MLA ECB Bamon if there was any proposal to set up model schools in Jaintia Hills, the Education minister replied in negative.
Similarly, no model schools have been approved for the West Khasi Hills too.
He also informed that the estimated budget of each of the proposed model school will be Rs 362.40 lakh.
