SHILLONG: NCP legislator James K Sangma on Wednesday came down heavily on the State Government for delaying the passage of the State Mining Policy.

Participating in the debate on the Governor’s Address on Wednesday, Sangma accused the government of being in nexus with the powerful mining lobby in the State.

He stated that the government was intentionally delaying implementation of the mining policy since it did not want to hurt the larger interests of the mining lobby.

“I fear that the mining policy is being delayed as the policy would hurt the larger interests of the lobby,” Sangma alleged.

“There is a powerful lobby trying to scrap the policy and government must come out with the policy to show that it does not have any nexus with the lobby,” the NCP legislator added.

He also pointed out the importance of the mining policy saying that it would streamline the unscientific mining in Meghalaya which is destroying the rivers of not only Jaintia Hills but all across the State.
