New Delhi: Government on Tuesday termed poverty and the lack of development in affected areas as the main cause for Left Wing extremism.
Union Home Minister P Chidambaram said the Central Government was giving all help to the state Governments to deal with the problem.
In a reply during the Question Hour, Mr Chidambaram said,”poverty and the neglect of the Naxal hit areas are the principal causes of Left Wing extremism in the country.”
At the same time, Mr Chidambaram said the Naxal leaders themselves were motivated by ideology and wanted to overthrow the parliamentary form of Democracy which was unacceptable.
Stating that the Centre was extending all help to state governments to deal with the menace, Mr Chidambaram said the Government was following a two-pronged strategy – necessary police action by state governments with help from the central forces and development works in the affected areas.
Mr Chidambaram expressed confidence that by working with state governments and adoption of the two-pronged strategy, the situation would be controlled in the medium term. (UNI)
