Guwahati: Though the ban on smoking in public places was already in force, Assam has now decided to implement it more effectively.

With a view to imposing prohibition on smoking in public places, conveyances etc, the Assam Commissionerate of Transport had instructed the District Transport Officers and various transport organisations to take immediate actions like displaying board or signage with warning reading ‘No Smoking Area-Smoking here is an Offence’.

An official release here on Tuesday said the Commissionerate had also added that failure to comply these provisions should be made punishable with fine up to Rs 200.

Smoking in public places, conveyances etc is banned under Section four of the Control of Tobacco Products Act 2003. (UNI)
