Guwahati: Assam police chief Jayanta Narayan Choudhury on Wednesday defended the police action against Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti leader and Team Anna member Akhil Gogoi on March 19.

Gogoi and his supporters were forcibly evicted and arrested from near the high security state secretariat after they blocked the roads demanding permanent land ownership rights documents for squatters in Guwahati area.

There was a minor scuffle when police tried to take Gogoi into custody and as he was pushed inside a bus by senior police officers, Gogoi allegedly kicked a Deputy Superintendent of Police.

“The district authorities had only given permission to around 100-120 protesters to hold a dharna at the spot. Everything was peaceful till around noon when Gogoi came there with some more supporters and started to block the roads,” Choudhury claimed.

“So we decided to arrest him. However, he resisted and even kicked one of our DSP. Everybody saw it on the TV,” he said. (PTI)
