Guwahati: The Indian Journalist Union on Friday condemned the ‘quit notice’ issued by the anti-talk faction of the ULFA against owner of a private TV channel.

The outfit issued the notice alleging that the channel portrayed its “negative picture”.

“The latest diktat is to be condemned as it amounts to impinging on freedom of the press,” IJU secretary Geetartha Pathak said in a statement here.

The ULFA’s anti-talk faction in an e-mail to the media last night had asked the owner of the private TV channel to quit the state for his alleged role in painting a “negative picture” about the outfit.

“The media as a whole has been publishing the views of the ULFA impartially so the latest reaction from the outfit is not acceptable,” he said.

“The outfit has got every right to issue a clarification if any news item is published which goes against their interest,” Pathak said.

The pressmen also observed that attacks against journalists are on the rise and should be dealt with firmly. (PTI)
