Guwahati: A leopard was beaten to death by angry residents of Maligaon area of Assam’s main city Guwahati today after it injured at least six persons.

Local residents claim that four more leopards are in the vicinity, though there is no confirmation on it.

The leopard was first spotted when it attacked a herd of goats in the area. Some people went to rescue the goats and were attacked by the leopard.

At least six persons were injured in the attack and four of the critically hurt were admitted to the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital here.

Agitated locals tried to trap the leopard but failed, prompting the public to beat it up to death.

Though some police personnel were present at the present, they could not control the public. Forest department personnel reportedly arrived much later at the scene.

Local people claim that four more leopards are in the area and a major part of an adjoining jungle was set on fire by the public to chase away the leopards. (UNI)
