TURA: The Central Executive Committee (CEC), Garo Students Union has alleged that the recent public rally demanding a separate state called by the Garo Hills Separate State Movement under the leadership of the Garo National Council (GNC) was a stunt for political mileage.

President, CEC, GSU, Tengsak G Momin speaking to this scribe over phone said that the Union had objected the idea of organizing a rally by the GNC demanding a separate state involving the Garo Hills Separate State Demand Committee (GHSDC) in a meeting held at the residence of the President, GNC, Clifford Marak as the people would perceive it as a move for political mileage because of the ensuing general assembly elections. Momin alleged that the GNC had been for long trying to rope in the services of the GSU to widen their political interests. The movement for a separate state is an unwritten ideology of the GSU and we would have supported the GNC for a separate state movement during any other time but the ensuing Assembly elections posed a problem stated Momin.

The GSU had suggested that the movement for a separate state be held after the general elections to get rid of misconceptions but they did not agree and went on with the rally he said andfurther stated that the move to demand a separate state should be an independent process and should not be determined by the ideology of a particular political party.
