NEW DELHI: Process for appointing the next Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) chief got rolling on Monday with the AICC general secretary in-charge of Meghalaya Dr Dhaniram Shandil holding consultations with the State Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma, Union Minister from the State and others.

Chief Minister Dr Sangma met Dr Shandil in the day. This was followed by a meeting with the Union Minister of State for Water Resources and Minority Affairs Vincent H Pala. The Secretary Sanjoy Bapna was also present in these two meetings. Earlier AICC leaders held talks with those leaders who had handled Meghalaya’s affairs earlier. “It was Madam Sonia Gandhi who will take the final call,” said one AICC leader on condition of anonymity.

Meanwhile, besides former Chief Minister D D Lapang and former MPCC chief O L Nongtudu, several other senior leaders have joined the race for the MPCC president’s post, the AICC leader said. The list includes present Working President Mrs Deobarah Marak, former NCW member Wangsuk, former Minister Saydullah Nongrum, Prestone Tynsong and Dr R C Laloo- both Ministers.

But the AICC leader said that since the Chief Minister is from the Garo Hills ideally the PCC chief will be from the Khasi-Jaintia Hills.
