SHILLONG: With an aim to protect and safeguard the environment as well as aquatic species, the Dorbar Shnong Nongbareh, 21 kms from Amlarem Sub Division’s headquarter has decided to turn part of the Umlaje River into a fish sanctuary.

The decision was made in the presence of members of the KSU including secretary Environment Protection Cell, KSU Central Body Wallambok Kharsati, the forerunner of the “save fish, save river”campaign at Jaintia Hills on Monday.

The Dorbar Shnong Nongbareh has expressed concern over the increase of human activities including mining which has affected the water bodies and aquatic lives to a great extend.

“Taking strong cognizance of this violation of the environment, we have decided to move a step forward by protecting and preserving the water bodies and aquatic lives by converting a part of this river into a fish sanctuary”, Assistant Secretary Nongbareh Shanbor Talang said.

It is learnt that for the past ten years, this village has been able to preserve the aquatic species of the Umlaje River and the decision to turn part of this river into a fish sanctuary is mainly to protect them from extinction.
