New Delhi: “If the party wants me to take up the onerous responsibility of presidentship, I shall do so as a disciplined party man,” said former Chief Minister DD Lapang.

Lapang, who is all set to become the president of the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), on Wednesday said he has always respected the wisdom of the party high command and the MLAs.

“When the MLAs and the high command wanted me to step down as the chief Minister two years ago I did it gracefully without waiting for a day,” he said.

“As the party has to face assembly polls in a year’s time all have to work unitedly,” he said adding that the party and the Government have to work in tandem.

Meanwhile, Congress sources on Wednesday said formal announcement regarding Lapang’s appointment as the new PCC chief will be made in Shillong sometime in next week in presence of AICC General Secretary Dr(Col) Dhaniram Shandil and Secretary Sanjay Bapna.

“It will be better if the formal announcement is made in Shillong in the presence of all the party leaders,” sources said.Meanwhile, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma, who took everyone by surprise by announcing his support for Lapang, left for Shillong on Wednesday. Lapang is leaving for Shillong on Thursday.
