SHILLONG: The Meghalaya Pensioners’ Association (MPA) has criticized the Director of NEIGRIHMS and Health Services Meghalaya for their assurance recently on the plight of the ageing group of people in the state by providing a separate counter for senior citizens or pensioners at this hospital.

Stating the directors’ assurance as appealing speeches, the MPA however stated that their assurance remained sealed as none of those promises were put into practice.

According to MPA president FB Lyngdoh, there was no separate counter either in the PHC, CHC and Neigrihms nor in the government hospitals and private hospitals but in the seminar recently, the director of NEIGRIHMS and Health Services Meghalaya have assured a compassionate consideration for senior citizens and the whole house without hesitation have agreed for opening separate counter for senior sitiens for registration.

Besides this, the senior citizens were also assured of getting the first preference in all OPDs examination and treatment.

However, none of these were implemented and we still see old people standing in long queues which is disappointing, Lyngdoh added.

“It is delightful to see that some public sector banks have provided separate counters for the senior citizens, it is much disappointing to see that the promise, made by the Director of Neigrihms, is still unimplemented”, Lyngdoh said.

The MPA has asked the state government to issue necessary instructions to all government hospitals, CHCs, PHCs and also to all the private hospitals located in Meghalaya to provide these facilities to senior citizens.
