Tura: The body of a teenage girl who drowned in the Simsang river during a boat capsize on Friday morning was fished out several kms down stream at around 3 pm on Saturday.

Friday morning’s tragedy unfurled when 18-year-old Gunnu G Momin was crossing the river from Sampalgre to Williamnagar market on a country boat with several other passengers when it hit a rock before touching ground on the other side of the bank causing a capsize.

The boat was leased out by the Williamnagar Municipal Board.

Most of the frantic passengers who fell into the water were saved by others from the boat who knew how to swim but the teenage girl was swept away by the strong water currents close to the river bank.

Her body was recovered from Nokma ghat down stream. She hailed from Hahim Bakrapara village.

The boat was in use because of Thursday night’s heavy thunderstorm which washed away the bamboo bridge connecting Williamnagar market to Sampalgre locality. Several small boats were also lost in the strong river currents during that night.

Locals say that a flash flood from heavy rains upstream occurred at around the same time when the boat mishap took place leading to loss of a precious life.

Two persons go missing: Two young men of Rongreng Chidikgre locality of Williamnagar have gone missing since Tuesday after they went out in a scooter to purchase bamboo products from nearby Sisobibra. Locals who searched for them later found their scooter abandoned in a jungle path. Both were young married men and police are investigating their disappearance.
