SHILLONG: With Bangladesh having a high density of population when compared to the Indian side, the district Additional Deputy Magistrate (ADM) of Sunamganj district of Bangladesh Manish Chakma feels that Indian traders would be more benefitted through the trading activities at Balat border haat.
“The demand for the Indian goods is very high in Bangladesh,” Chakma said while speaking to reporters after formally starting trading activities at the border haat on Tuesday.
Besides the agricultural products, he said they would take up with the Bangladesh Government to allow the trading of melamine products which has a high demand in India.
Chakma said that it would difficult on the part of the Bangladesh to sell fish in the border haat due to production shortage.
“We are not able to meet the demands of fish in our country,” Sunamganj district ADM said.
Meanwhile, East Khasi Hills Additional Deputy Magistrate DM Wahlang said the formal inauguration of this border haat is likely to take place in the third week of this month.
When asked on the steps taken to ensure that no illegal smuggling of goods takes place inside the border haat, he said all possible measures have been taken to address this problem.
Wahlang informed that UCO Bank from the Indian side and Jayanta Bank from Bangladesh have agreed to facilitate in the exchange of currency inside the border haat.
