SHILLONG: Issuing a virtual warning to their seniors, the State Youth Congress president Gabriel Wahlang said, “Youth Congress should not be ‘misused’ at the time of election.”

“We would no longer allow Youth Congress to be misused at the time of election. The party leadership should give due recognition to the youth body since it is an elected one,” Wahlang said on the sidelines of the three-day workshop of the Youth Congress here on Monday. He said this negative attitude towards the Youth wing of the party is not a healthy trend.

According to Wahlang, since the previous body was a nominated one the party leadership adopted a negative attitude towards it.

“In fact, the young party leaders who were nominated to hold various posts in the Youth Congress were those who had a close proximity with some senior leaders,” the State Youth Congress president said.

While admitting that the procedures followed in the past was not in accordance with the democratic set up, Wahlang said that the Youth Congress is now a more vibrant body since the intervention of AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi who believes in the empowerment of the youth.

He said the AICC general secretary had issued a clear cut directive to hold election to the Youth Congress in a free and fair manner.
