Enrolment process to continue: CM

By Our Reporter

SHILLONG: In a bid to pacify the agitating NGOs, the State Government has decided to comply with one of their major demands by taking a call to remove the ‘facilitation cell’ while maintaining that the enrolment process for voters would continue.

The Government has also decided to put in place appropriate machinery for encouraging the bonafide citizens of the State to enroll themselves.

“After diligently reviewing the situation I have decided to remove the facilitation cells with immediate effect,” Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma told reporters here on Friday.

It may be mentioned that the three agitating NGOs (KSU, FKJGP and HNYF) have demanded the removal of the facilitation cells and immediately suspension of the ongoing enrolment of voters.

The Chief Minister, however, informed that he would like to put in place an appropriate machinery to enable the bonafide citizens of the State to come forward and enroll themselves as voters.

He also assured that the machinery which the Government intends to put in place would take all possible measures to maintain necessary checks and balances while carrying out the enrolment process.

Meanwhile, Dr Sangma informed that the Government is also planning to conduct an exercise to sensitize the eligible youths of the State on the importance of being part of the democratic set up by enrolling themselves in the voter’s list.

“We are planning to carry this sensitization exercise in various colleges and educational institutions of the State. The respective District Election Officers (DEOs) and Assistant Election Returning Officers (AEROs) would be responsible for carrying out this programme,” the Chief Minister said adding that the DEOs and AEROs would work out a calendar to hold this sensitization programme.

Meanwhile, Dr Sangma informed that the Government would also create a helpline to attend to the various queries relating to the enrolment drive.

He informed that the helpline would be created at the District and Sub-Division level.
