Despite the efforts of
the paramilitary forces and the Air Force to keep the Shillong Golf Course clean, indifferent attitude on part of the common public is a cause of concern for the area which is the pride of the city.
The golf course has pleasantly improved in the past few months, thanks to the efforts of the personnel of the BSF, Assam Rifles and Air Force.
Besides maintaining the green, the defence personnel have also made an earnest effort to clean the surrounding of the golf course.
The men in uniform have also taken the pain of cutting the branches of trees which were destroying the beauty of the golf course and if one happens to visit the green stretch the efforts are easily noticeable.
Before the involvement of the forces, the golf course was a dumping ground with people indiscriminately throwing waste materials and ironically despite the ongoing efforts, the attitude of the visitors has not changed much.
Thanks to the picnics besides games of football and cricket played by youths from the locality, the golf course is usually left in shambles during the weekends.
“We are really concerned to see people treating the golf course like a dustbin,” SCG director RL Shullai said here on Monday.
While expressing his dismay on the negative attitude on part of the commoners when it comes to maintaining the cleanliness of the ground, Shullai said that before committing any nuisance people should realize that the golf course is not only the pride of the city but of the State as a whole.
When asked about the efforts of the paramilitary forces including the Air Force in maintaining the cleanliness of the golf course, he said that the forces need to be well appreciated by all concerned while admitting that the condition of the course has drastically improved in the past few months.
“We had handed over the course to the forces for help in the maintenance of certain portions, especially the green, since we do not have required funds and manpower to maintain it on their own,” Shullai.
Meanwhile, Shillong Golfer’s Association (SGA) president AL Hek has also expressed concerned on the manner the people are dumping the waste materials along the golf course.
“What is more painful is to see people throwing bottles inside the golf course which is risky for those who walk bare footed inside the area during their morning walk,” Hek pointed out.
Meanwhile, he also lauded the efforts of the forces for assisting in the maintenance of the ground.
“I feel the common citizens of the State should appreciate the efforts of the personnel of these forces by assisting them in keeping the golf course clean,” SGA president added. (By Lamphrang Nongspung)
