Shillong: Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma on Wednesday said that the inability of the famous educational institutions of Shillong to accommodate more students from the North East has forced many students to move out to bigger cities to pursue their studies.
Addressing a gathering while laying the foundation stone for the new building of Islamia Secondary Schoool, Dr Sangma said, “Meghalaya has missed an opportunity as the prominent institutes do not have the capacity to take in more students from other states of the region which in turn compels students to move outside the region for their studies,”
The statement assumes significance as there is a virtual exodus of students from the North East including Shillong. Most of them are going outside the region to pursue a range of academic and professional courses.
According to Dr Sangma, there should be a complete engagement between parents and teachers. He urged the teachers to pay greater attention to weaker students so as to bring them at par with bright students.
Earlier, Mawprem legislator Manas Chaudhuri stated that the school management committees should be in tune with the various Government initiatives for the education sector.
The estimated budget for the new school building is Rs 2 crore and the completion time for the new building is three years.
It may be mentioned that Islamia Secondary School is one of the oldest schools in the city which started way back in 1912. Over the years the school has steadily progressed to accommodate more students but the new building is expected to take the school to a higher level.
