Shillong: Voicing its concern against the All Party Committee recommendation to give voting rights to any person staying in the State for at least six months, a delegation from Jaintia Hills has termed the move as a ‘threat to the indigenous communities of the state’.

Disclosing their opinion on the matter at a press conference here on Wednesday, Pohsngap said like Tripura, tribals of Meghalaya will become extinct and the indigenous traditions will be wiped out completely.

It may be mentioned that the all party committee, constituted to ease the standoff between the government and NGOs on enrolment of “dubious” voters, in its recommendation to the state government has mooted that a person who comes from outside the state should stay in Meghalaya for at least six months to stake his or her claim for entry into the voters’ list. “We are already facing a problem of influx in the state and implementation of this rule will further worsen the situation,” leader of the delegation Baitla Pohsngap said.
