SHILLONG: Former Lok Sabha Speaker Purno Agitok Sangma has got a shot in the arm with UDP president Dr Donkupar Roy extending his support to the veteran leader for staking his claim for the country’s highest post.

“I would really want to see Purno Sangma become the President of the country. It would be a great thing for the State if he becomes the President,” Dr Roy said while speaking to reporters here on Thursday.

Informing that his party had not yet discussed the matter, the UDP president believed that all the party leaders would have the same feeling over Sangma’s candidature for the President’s post.

Earlier, Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president DD Lapang on Monday had expressed his inability to extend support to the NCP leader saying that the decision should come from the All India Congress Committee (AICC) and not the MPCC.

Meanwhile, the NCP state unit has already geared up to garner support for its leader to stake claims for the post of President.

NCP spokesperson and party legislator James Sangma had informed that the NCP state unit will hold a meeting here on Saturday to be attended by all the party legislators, MDCs and members to frame plans for Purno’s campaign.

TGCSU supports Sangma

The Tura Government College Students’ Union (TGCSU) has expressed its support for the veteran politician of the State to stake claims to the President’s post.

TGCSU general secretary, Nikman Ch Marak, said that if PA Sangma is nominated for the seat, it would not only bring glory to the A’chik people but would also be a great achievement for the North East and the entire tribal and Christian populace of India.

“PA Sangma is one of the most prominent leaders of the country and he is no less significant than other candidates running for Presidency,” Marak stated, while appealing to other regional parties of the country to Sangma’s campaign.
