Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma today inaugurated the pilot project on ‘Employment Linked Vocational Training Programme’ of the BSF at Tura in West Garo Hills district aimed at providing employment-linked vocational training.
Initiated by the BSF Wives Welfare Association (BWWA), the programme was supported by the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and its corporate partners.
Inaugurating the programme, Sangma said this is the beginning for BSF to open the avenues of participation with border population, with the help of the state government.
Lauding the force’s initiatives, the chief minister complemented BSF’s Vocational Training Programme concerning garment manufacture and termed it a new initiative.
Stating that the country used to be the number one in garment export but has now slipped to number six, he attributed the reason to the location of garment manufacturing industries in cities/metros where the manufacturing cost is higher due to inherent high expenditure.
The chief minister who was in Bangladesh recently said garment factories in that country are mostly located in rural areas.
At present the NSDC and the BSF are running the employment-linked vocational training tutorials at three locations, in New Delhi, at the Frontier Headquarters in Shillong and at Tura.
Others present on the occasion were Sudesh Kumar, Inspector General, Meghalaya Frontier, Vijay Sakhare, Nodal Officer for Employment Linked Vocational Training Programme, representative of National Skills Development Corporation and Indian Institute of Skill Development besides Meghalaya Transport Minister and others.
