Guwahati: Underlining mutual interest India and Bangladesh share in terms of commerce and development, Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Tariq Karim has stressed the need for promoting water-traffic through the Brahmaputra river.

Calling on Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi at his residence here last evening, Mr Karim raised the issue of starting ship services on the Brahmaputra.

Mr Gogoi supported the Bangladeshi diplomat’s views and said the government was already looking into the matter.

The matter of flood and erosion was also discussed by Mr Gogoi and Mr Karim at the meeting.

They also talked on an array of subjects of mutual interest like trade and commerce and exploring power generation options for accelerated development.

Mr Karim praised the success of the Gogoi-government in restoring peace in the insurgency-hit state, which has put it back on the ladder of development.

Transportation on the Brahmaputra, a major river of both Assam and Bangladesh, also came up for discussion with Gogoi pointing out that he has always stressed the need to improve transportation facilities across the Brahmaputra. (UNI)
