Shillong: Mawlai MDC Embhah B Syiemlieh has urged the Executive Committee (EC) of the KHADC to clarify its stand on the allotment of the task to clean the Wah Umkrah River to the Rangbah Shnong of various localities.

“It is true that the foundation stone has been laid for implementation the Rs 50 lakh project to clean the Wahumkhrah under the 13th Finance Commission but there is no clarity in the budgetary speech which mentioned that the task to clean the river has been assigned to the Rangbah Shnong”, Syielmlieh said.

The Mawlai MDC has asked the EC to produce the documents to verify that the task has already been assigned to the respective Rangbah Shnong. He also reiterated that the responsibility to clean the once serene river is the duty of the KHADC as it has taken up this challenge in collaboration with the Rangbah Shnong.

Reacting to this, Executive Member in charge of Finance NA War said that the documents have been issued to the Rangbah Shnong and the Council is working hand-in-hand with the community to clean the river.
Meanwhile, Mawkhar MDC JB Basaiawmoit pointed out that the task to clean the river was first taken up by the KHADC and the State Government stepped in later with Rs 46.5 crore flood control project.
“I think, the Government should go via the Council in implementing the project”, Basaiawmoit said adding that the EC should write a letter to the state water resource department in this regard.
