JOWAI: As part of the quasqui centenary celebrations of the Unitarian Church, the Outreach Committee of the Unitarian Church, Jowai organized a free medical checkup camp for the orphans in the Annie Margaret Barr Children’s Village (AMBCV), Mawsynjri under the Mawkynrew development block East Khasi hills district on Saturday.
AMBCV is an orphanage run by the Unitarian Union with 20 orphans coming from different part of the state.
The Children’s village which was established by the Church in memory of Late Annie Magarett Barr, a Unitarian Minister from England, also an educationist par-excellence who spend the last part of her life in the Kharang area is part of the Kharang Rural Centre (KRC) Project started by Rev Barr herself.
The KRC includes a Secondary School and a health centre and the Children’s village is a project of the Unitarian Church in the Northeast India which caters to the need of the people in the area. Dr Rica Lamarr and Dr. Ellery Mylliemngap conducted the medical checkup for the children and their mothers and provided free medicines to them.
Speaking in the meeting before the programme Dr. Lamarr impressed upon the children on the need to maintain cleanliness and to live a life fueled by healthy habits.
The meeting was also addressed by the Y. Pde Assistant Minister Unitarian Church, Kharang, Bahun Mukhim Secretary Orphanage Managing Committee, Biangpor S. Shylla Secretary of Outreach Committee Unitarian Church, Jowai and Dr Ellery M. Ngap Chairman of the Committee.
