Guwahati: What was unfolding in a wetland within the periphery of Guwahati city on Monday was unprecedented. A large number of people, mostly youngsters, dived into the water body to get hold of currency notes floating in it.

It all started in the morning hours when a group of fishermen found some currency notes in the denomination of Rs 1000 and Rs 500 at Silsako beel at Sasal area in the city while they were out fishing there as usual.

As soon as the news of recovery of currency notes spread, a large number of other people including teenagers and even some young women jumped into the wetland to fish out currency notes, if any. In the process, a sizeable number of them emerged successful in laying their hands on currency notes of high denominations floating in the water body.

As the local TV channels started beaming the mad rush of people in the water body on the look out for currency notes, a large number of people rushed to the area to witness the development creating congestion on the road even as police started investigation into it.

Police quizzed some of those who claimed to have got hold of currency notes in the wetland.

However, police so far has no clue as to how such a large number of currency notes found way to the wetland that is located near city’s Ginger Hotel.

It is so far not known what was the total amount of money recovered by people from the wetland. Some have claimed to have become richer by Rs 15,000 or so.
