SHILLONG: “Cancer is something which should be dealt with a positive mindset and a constructive approach,” this thought came up in the Survival Meet of cancer patients which was organised in the Shillong Civil Hospital by State Cancer Society of Meghalaya (SCSM) and Joint Director of Health and Services in collaboration with Civil Hospital on Wednesday.
The programme was organised to lend a helping hand to the cancer patients who are still fighting with the disease besides felicitating the individuals who survived cancer.
Deputy Director of Sports and Youth Affairs, J S R Marak, while addressing the gathering said that he himself suffered from the dreaded disease but has managed to battle and overcome it after the operation in Shillong Civil Hospital.
According to Marak, apart from scientific methods even traditional methods can cure the disease which is feared all over the world.
“It is our fear and ignorance that leads to misconception of the disease and people think they will be dead after catching the disease but there is always ways and means to cure such disease,” he said.
Speaking at the meeting, Joint Director of Health and Services cum Surgeon Superintendent of Civil Hospital, Shillong, Dr. A Marwein said that though cancer is a killer disease, yet people should not lose hope since it can be cured.
The meet saw many cancer survivors and those still fighting the disease who gladly presented rather encouraging testimonies saying that they never lost hope even after knowing that they were suffering from cancer and believed in God’s power to heal.
“The confidence in being able to win this battle steered me through all these years,” said a cancer patient.
However, in the midst of all, it is rather discouraging to see that the State till date does not have a Cancer Support Group and an invitation has been sent on behalf of the cancer patients for any individual, NGO, political party to set up such group.
