NONGSTOIN: Langpih is gearing up for the fast-unto-death resolved by Pynskhem Nongshlong scheduled to start from Saturday.
On Thursday, more than 500 villagers participated in the construction of the shed where Nongshlong along with others would sit for the fast which is being termed as historic by many.
The construction of the shed was supervised by Hindro Samakha headman of the Hima Raid Mynsaw, Trasdingland Nonglang Chairman of the Headmen’s Committee of the Area and Stanley Kharbani Secretary of the West Khasi Hills Headmen for Peace and Development Council.
The shed has been constructed taking the season into consideration, Samakha said.
With the unpredictable weather over the last few days, villagers have taken both the glaring rays of the sun and the torrential rains into account.
With the construction slowly taking shape, the people are filled with an unprecedented fervor and they hope that this event would finally deliver them from the clutches of the Assam government, the villagers added.
They also said that nothing could stop them from taking up the fast because just as the Indian Union had fought the British regime peacefully, they too believe that they have every right to demonstrate peacefully to achieve their freedom.
Some of the villagers were almost in tears when they said that if this event was successful, they would be able to move around without fear, build anything without fear and above all sleep without fear.
