Indefinite fast-unto-death begins at Langpih
Shillong: Over 600 people participated in the indefinite fast-unto-death led by 28-year-old Pynshkemlang Nongshlong in Langpih on Saturday.
The fast is an attempt to put pressure on the State Government and the Centre to resolve the long-pending border dispute between Assam and Meghalaya at the earliest.
The hunger strike saw active participation of villagers, including women and children, who voiced their strong support for Nongshlong’s campaign.
West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner S Kharlyngdoh said, “We have sent additional forces of up to one platoon and medical team has also been put in place just in case there is any emergency. Magistrates and senior police officers are also present.”
“Officials from Assam were also on standby,” Kharlyngdoh added.
Meanwhile, the People’s Movement, a group led by UDP MLA Ardent Basaiawmoit, which is spearheading the fight to solve the long pending border dispute with neighbouring Assam, also staged a one-day demonstration in Shillong expressing solidarity with the fast-unto-death agitation by the people at the border. The delegation of the People’s Movement would also visit Langpih next week to join Nongshlong in his fast. (PTI)
