NONGSTOIN: With the fast-unto-death led by Pynskhemlang Nongshlong over the Assam-Meghalaya border row entering the fourth day, the health of several people participating in the hunger strike deteriorated on Tuesday.

The doctors camping at the site of the protest on Tuesday recommended immediate hospitalization of several agitators including Pynskhemlang.

One of the agitators Ephrom K Dowsaw (33) was later rushed to Nongstoin Civil Hospital after he collapsed following a drop in his blood pressure level.

All of the agitators have lost several kilos in just four days. Pynskhemlang has lost 4 kilos and his BP has dropped to 90/60.

Two doctors from Nonglang PHC are camping at Langpih to monitor the health of Nongshlong and others who joined in the hunger strike, sources said.

According to doctors, the health condition of agitators is a cause for worry. They said any further delay in admitting them to a hospital would prove fatal.

However the agitating activists have refused to be admitted to hospital despite repeated requests from the doctors as well as officials of the district administration.

Nongshlong and others began their fast-unto-death on June 30 at Langpih near the memorial stone, built in memory of the four Khasi villagers from Langpih area who were killed in firing by Assam police on May 14, 2010.

Meanwhile, leaders of the People’s Movement under the leadership of UDP MLA Ardent Basiawmoit on Tuesday visited Langpih to meet Nongshlong and others who are on a fast-unto-death.

Mrs Fenela L Nonglait, MDCs K P Pangniang, L G Nongsiej, Enbin K Raswai, Ban Basaiawmoit and Adelbert Nongrum, former KSU (Central body) general secretary Hamlet Dohling, FKJGP Working President Joe Marwein, Palwanbor Syiem President FKJGP (West Khasi Hills) and John Fischer President KSU (West Khasi Hills) were part of the People’s Movement delegation.

In his speech, Ardent said Hopingstone Lyngdoh was the only legislator who has been consistently fighting on the Langpih issue. He also lauded Pynskhemlang for choosing the path of non-violence.

Although elections to the State Assembly is just round the corner, Ardent promised that the Langpih issue would be his priority.
