Shillong: In a shocking incident, an agitator who was participating in the fast-unto-death at Langpih, and was admitted at the Shillong Civil Hospital due to failing health, was robbed of Rs 10,000 on Thursday night.

According to a source, the incident occurred on Thursday night after Ephraim K Desaw and two other agitators — 85-year-old Ninghain Samakha and 73-year-old Markasing Kharbani — were shifted to a separate room at the hospital.

“The money has not been traced yet,” the source added.

The source informed that Desaw’s wife, who had accompanied her husband to Shillong for his treatment, had kept the money in her purse. On Friday morning she found out that the money was not in her purse.

“The incident could have happened in the wee hours of Friday when the agitators were sound asleep,” the source said, adding that no FIR has been filed by Desaw and his wife.

“Being from a rural area, the couple was ignorant of the procedures of filing an FIR but the same will be done shortly,” the source said.

Meanwhile, another agitator, Brim Myrthong (36) was also shifted to Shillong Civil Hospital from Langpih on Friday after he complained of severe pains on his shoulder.

It is noteworthy that Myrthong had survived the firing incident at Langpih on May 14, 2010 even though he was shot on his shoulder.

Sources said that the State Government has promised a government job to Myrthong considering his physical health but till date, the promise has remained unfulfilled. Interestingly, sources also informed that the two old men — Samakha and Kharbani — broke their fast on Friday morning after they were forced to eat by the nurses and doctors of the Shillong Civil Hospital, who threatened to hand them over to the police if they did not eat.

“Filled with fear, they had no choice but to eat. I don’t think it is a good way to make someone break their fast by threatening them,” the sources said.
