New Delhi: Congress legislator Sayeedulah Nongrum on Friday demanded central help for the flood affected areas of Garo Hills.

Nearly a lakh people have been rendered homeless in the devastating floods in the plain areas of Garo Hills adjacent to Assam. “Flood-swollen Brahmaputra and Jingiram rivers submerged hundreds of villages along their banks,” Nongrum said.

Supply of relief materials and essential commodities to the affected people has already started and around 15 camps were also set up to provide temporary shelter to the homeless. “This is not enough and much more relief should come to the affected areas,” Nongrum added.

Hundreds of houses in the affected areas were either completely under water or partly submerged, Nongrum, who represents the areas, said. “Several government schools and police outposts in Phulbari, Rajabala, Nollbari, Islampur areas were also submerged,” he said.
