SHILLONG: Toughening their stand on Langpih dispute, People’s Movement, a conglomerate of social organisations and public representatives, has called a one-day office picketing on July 13 to pressurize the State Government to solve the vexed boundary dispute with Assam.
This was announced by Ardent Basaiawmoit, MLA and a member of the People’s Movement, here on Monday.
The office picketing comes at a time when the agitators led by Pynskhemlang Nongshlong (28), a resident of Rambrai village, are on fast-unto-death at Langpih demanding an early solution to the boundary dispute.
While reiterating that the Meghalaya Government should not hold talks with Assam on this issue, Basaiawmoit said the Central Government should intervene and act as “umpire” to solve the problem.
Apart from the office picketing, People’s Movement, a group spearheading the fight to solve the long pending border dispute with neighbouring Assam, has also decided to hold a series public meeting to mobilize people on this crucial issue.
“How can we hold talks with Assam who is so aggressive,” he told reporters.
Basaiawmoit also questioned the seriousness of the State Government in resolving the dispute saying “the State Government has not done enough to pursue the matter with the Centre.”
Stir postponed: Meanwhile, the Meghalaya Upper Primary School Teachers’ Association (MUPSTA), which was schedule to stage its 30-hour fast, prayer from Monday demanding an early solution to the border dispute, has temporarily postponed the agitation.
The MUPSTA general secretary Kenneth Shadap on Monday said, “We have postponed it following a request from the People’s Movement.”
Shadap will meet the representatives of People’s Movement on Tuesday to decide a fresh date for holding the programme.
