ULFA cadre held, goods seized
BSF troops deployed in West Garo Hills apprehended a senior ULFA cadre while he was illegally crossing over to Bangladesh from India. The cadre has been identified as Ratul Pathai alias Rahul (34), a resident of Barpeta, Assam. During search, the troops recovered Indian currency of Rs 800 and a mobile phone. During preliminary questioning the apprehended cadre revealed that he was going to Bangladesh to meet ULFA leader Dristi Rajkowa. There were three more untrained cadres with him but they managed to escape taking cover of the darkness. In another seizure, the BSF deployed in South Garo Hills seized 10 kg of hemp worth approximately Rs 1 lakh while it was being smuggled into Bangladesh. Besides this, the BSF troops also seized 50 numbers of cattle, wooden logs and other items of the estimated cost of Rs 12.66 lakh in the past week. The seized items have been handed over to the concerned department for necessary action.
Advocacy meet
The Director of Health Services will hold a state-level Advocacy meeting on World Population Day on July 11 at Anton hall, Laitumkhrah.
Cables damaged
The BSNL has informed that due to widening of road and PHE water pipe laying work in Nongmynsong and Setuk main road, all BSNL underground cables have been damaged due to which connectivity has been affected in Nongmynsong Bazaar, Umpling BSF headquarters and other places. The expected time of restoration is seven to ten days.
Anti-liquor drive
In its drive against illicit liquor trade, the Excise Staff of East Khasi Hills district conducted raids in restaurants in and around the city in May and detected 47 cases with a seizure of 113.900 litres of ID liquor and 193.158 litres of IMFL. Forty seven persons were also arrested under the Excise Act.
