Shillong: Government offices including financial institutions on Friday wore a deserted look with low attendance recorded in almost all the offices in the city due to the one-day picketing called by the People’s Movement in protest against the State Government’s delay in solving the vexed boundary issue between Meghalaya with Assam.

Attendance was thin despite a Government directive asking all the employees to attend offices. Educational institutions were, however, exempted from the purview of the picketing. Traffic on the roads was thin unlike other working days. Security was tightened in and around the city to thwart attempts by miscreants to prevent office goers from attending to their duties.

There was no report of any incident from any part of the city during the course of the picketing.

Attendance was also affected in offices in Ri Bhoi district due to the picketing. Most of the offices recorded low to medium attendance with official figure pegged at 50 per cent.

According to official sources, the turnout of government employees in office in Nongpoh was 55 per cent, while in Umsning it was 40 per cent. Attendance in offices located at Umiam stood at 45 per cent while Patharkhmah registered the lowest attendance at only 10 per cent.

There was no report of any untoward incident from any parts of the district.
