SHILLONG: The United Democratic Party (UDP) on Saturday stated that it does not subscribe to the decision of the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP) to withdraw support from the Congress-led MUA Government in the State.

The UDP also avowed to continue its support to the Government till the end of the term, despite not being satisfied with the performance of the Dr Mukul Sangma-led Government.

UDP working president Paul Lyngdoh said that though the Government has failed on various fronts, he does not think it appropriate to withdraw support from the Government with barely eight months left for the Assembly polls.

“Even if the UDP decides to withdraw support, it would not make any difference since the Government would remain in power till the end of its term,” Lyngdoh said.

The HSPDP had, on Friday, decided to withdraw its support from the Government and the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) over its inability to resolve the long-pending boundary dispute between Meghalaya and Assam.

With two legislators – Hopingstone Lyngdoh and Dr Advisor Pariong – in the 60-member House, the HSPDP has been extending support to the Congress-led government since May 2009.

The party has four members in the KHADC and has been supporting the Executive Committee led by Congressman Pynshngain Syiem since 2010.

With the withdrawal of support of the HSPDP, the strength of the ruling MUA coalition in the Assembly would be reduced to 43.
