SHILLONG: In a virtual U-turn, the Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP), the oldest regional political outfit in the state, has kept in abeyance its earlier decision withdraw support from the Congress-led MUA government and the executive committee of the KHADC.

HSPDP general secretary Enbin K. Raswai in a press release issued here on Tuesday said the party took this decision following an assurance from Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma to the party president Hopingstone Lyngdoh on July 16 that the issue of boundary dispute with Assam would be taken up in the all-party meeting to be held on July 25.

It may be mentioned that the HSPDP’s Central Executive Committee (CEC) on July 13 had decided to withdraw support both from the Government and KHADC due to the inability of the government to resolve the long-pending boundary dispute between Meghalaya and Assam.

With two legislators – Hopingstone Lyngdoh and Advisor Pariong – in the 60-member House, the HSPDP has been extending support to the Congress-led government since May 2009.

The party has four members in the KHADC and has been supporting the executive committee led by Congress’s Pynshngain Syiem since 2010.
