SHILLONG: The much-anticipated modernization-cum-expansion work of the Mawmluh Cherra Cement Limited (MCCL) is likely to be completed by March next year.

The MCCL’s production capacity would increase from 500 tonnes to 1200 tonnes per day once the expansion work is complete, official sources on Tuesday informed.

When asked about the status of the expansion work, sources said, “At present, we are mostly fitting the machines of the new plant”.

Informing that the MCCL has sought Rs 30 crore from the Government for its ongoing modernization-cum-expansion work, sources said the Government has already released the full amount.

The original estimate of the expansion project was Rs 85 crore out of which the cement plant got a bank loan of Rs 28 crore.

Though the present capacity of the plant is 500 tonnes per day, the plant is actually producing 240-250 tonnes per day due to ongoing repair work.

The MCCL, meanwhile, has sought additional Rs 5 crore from the government to replace some machines of the existing plant which are more than 40 years old.
