MAWSYNRAM: Majority of the State Highways and major district roads would get a facelift in the next few months with the Government deciding to allocate funds to repair these roads, Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma announced on Friday.

Dr Sangma made the announcement during an official function here after getting a first-hand experience of travelling on the bumpy roads on his way to Mawsynram from Shillong.

Dr Sangma also admitted that majority of the roads in the State were in a pathetic condition since the Government had failed to take up repair of the roads in a periodic manner.

“What is happening today is that the PWD would carry out patch work of the roads which are in bad shape. The repair work is being done through the funds from the Non-Plan,” the Chief Minister said.

The Chief Minister also stated that the Government has adopted a strategy for proper repair of the roads and has sanctioned a total amount of Rs 505 crore from the Plan money for the current fiscal year.

“We have also sanctioned some funds for repairing of the road to Mawsynram. I hope that the repair work of this road would be taken up very soon,” he told the large gathering.
