SHILLONG: After a group of journalists recently exposed the cattle smuggling racket, the BSF on Monday swung into action and seized 36 cows worth Rs 2.60 lakh which were being smuggled into Bangladesh.
In a press statement issued here on Tuesday, the BSF has claimed that it is continuously conducting drive against the cattle smugglers. The BSF further claimed that with the help of the State police, it has been laying mobile check posts on converging points to intercept cattle going towards the border.
During the year 2012, the BSF claim to have seized cattle numbering 311 and worth Rs 53.91 lakh at the India-Bangladesh border in the State.
The BSF also informed that it has intensified operations on the border to prevent trans-border crimes. It may be mentioned that the rampant smuggling of cattle into Bangladesh came to light after a group of journalists, including one from The Shillong Times reported of the crime after they visited the affected areas in the wee hours of Sunday. The BSF was forced to swing into action after the news report appeared that 15 to 20 trucks filled with cattle are smuggled into Bangladesh through Pynursla everyday.
