SHILLONG: The Department of Health and Family Welfare has clarified that the department does not hold an interview to assess the candidate’s suitability for being selected to the MBBS and BDS courses.
“The allotment of seats is done purely on the basis of the marks obtained in the Board examinations in Physics, Chemistry & Biology (PCB). In case of a tie, the marks in English are also considered for selection of candidates and no other criteria is considered by the Department,” Secretary Health, DP Wahlang said in a statement issued here on Wednesday.
The Health department further clarified that they only hold a medical fitness test to conduct various physical/ clinical tests on the intending applicants to ensure that the specified criteria for admission into medical institutions is fulfilled by the candidates, and so that the State Government does not lose any seat on this ground.
“Due to unavoidable reasons, two intending candidates could not appear for the medical fitness test on June 22, the scheduled date,” the department said.
Informing that the two candidates had requested for a fresh date/time for the medical fitness test the department said this request was acceded to on humanitarian grounds and a fresh date was given for the test.
“Despite the second chance one of the candidates could not appear for the test,” the department said.
Refuting allegations that other States have already allotted seats for MBBS etc to their students the Health Department said this is incorrect, since the Centre has not yet allotted the Central Quota Seats to any State Government till date.
