UMSNING: Peeved with the indifferent attitude of the State Education Minister Dr. R C Laloo over their demand of setting up a government college in and around Umsning areas, the Ri Bhoi Students Union (RBSU) on Wednesday decided to hold a sit in demonstration at Umsning from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday next week.

RBSU President Tynshain Lapang informed this decision to media persons after the general body meeting of the Union held at the community hall, Umsning Pata Rim on Wednesday afternoon.

He also said that they had submitted a memorandum to Laloo on May 17, last demanding the setting up of government college in and around Umsning areas as to cater to the education needs of the students who till date either have to go to Shillong or Nongpoh for pursuing studies beyond HSSLC or they are compelled to drop out.

“We were shocked and baffled to receive a reply from Laloo through his private secretary vide letter no. RCL/10/2 Dated Shillong the 19th July, 2012 stating that the government colleges cannot be set up at the moment due to shortage of funds,” Lapang informed in response to their memorandum.

RBSU vice president Samborlang Diengdoh said that the reply from the Minister should have been more constructive as they are demanding a genuine demand for the greater interest of the students’ community of Ri Bhoi District.

“Is the government adopting a double standard policy as the minister in public podium would announce that the government is committed toward uplifting the educations sectors but when we demands for a government college the minister would just wash their hands off but saying no funds and end the matter then and there”, Diengdoh questioned.
