SHILLONG: After successfully resuming the Pawan Hans chopper service in the State, the Government now plans to build its own helipad in the Upper Shillong Advanced Landing Ground (ALG).

Highly placed sources from the State Transport department recently said that the Eastern Air Command has given the No Objection Certificate (NOC) to the State Government to build its own helipad in the same landing ground. “We have been able to convince them for our own helipad,” sources said.

The State Government owned helipad would largely help the passengers from the state “who face too many restrictions” put by the Air Force personnel in the current helipad that

belongs to the Indian Air Force.

According to sources, if everything goes well, construction for the helipad could begin in two months time. The Government, meanwhile, is working on the details of the project.

The proposed helipad will have fuel stations besides sitting place for the passengers and other facilities.

At present, the Pawan Hans choppers operate between Shillong-Guwahati-Tura and depending on the demand, the services may be extended upto Jowai.
