Meet on pending boundary disputes

JOWAI: The Border Joint Action Committee-Jaintia and Karbi (BJAC-JK) comprising the Jaintia Students Union (JSU), the Karbi Students’ Association (KSA) and headmen of border villages both from Khasi Pnar and Karbi community will meet the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) on Monday.
A team of JSU leaders and headmen left Jaintia hills for Diphu on Sunday morning.
According the JSU President, the meeting with the KAAC Chief scheduled at 1 am will be on boundary dispute and border related problems faced by both the Khasi Pnar and Karbi people residing along the Jaintia hill- Karbi-Anglong border.
Earlier, the Border Joint Action Committee-Jaintia and Karbi (BJAC-JK) had stated that the unresolved boundary dispute between Meghalaya and Assam in Jaintia Hills-Karbi Anglong areas could be solved politically while taking into account the views of the people residing along the border areas. “We will meet the KAAC CEM to press for a solution to the long pending border issues between Jaintia hills and Karbi-Anglong”, the JSU President, Elnathan Pale said.
Engleng had earlier mentioned that both the state governments should take into consideration past documents like the 1951 Act relating to the creation of Mikir Hills and North Cachar Hills and the North Eastern Re-Organisation Act, 1971 when both the governments constituted a body to find out a solution to the issue especially the demarcation of the boundary. He stated that the opinions of the people residing along the inter-state border are equally important in resolving this issue, adding that both the state governments should include the aspirations of the headmen and people residing along the border areas when they come to an understanding for resolving the boundary issue. The BJAC-JK was supposed to meet the KAAC Chief Executive Member on July 26, however it was postponed due to the bandh called in Karbi-Anglong District.
The BJAC-JK will also take up the matter with the Assam Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi.
