Shillong: The SDO Civil Mairang, AM Sangma has expressed disappointment over the FKJGP Mairang circle’s apprehension of 65 workers of the BSC C&C company recently.

“They (FKJGP) have no right to apprehend the workers of the company without prior approval. Such actions are against the law,” the SDO said after conducting a meeting with the NGO in presence of the officials from the Labour department and the company.

Recently, the FKJGP had apprehended 65 non-tribal workers of the BSC C&C company in West Khasi Hills allegedly for not possessing legal documents to support their identity. “Why doesn’t the government put us in jail saying that arresting an illegal migrant is wrong”, president of FKJGP Mairang Circle, Bobby Basaiawmoit said.

The FKJGP also demanded the company to arrange all the legal documents of the workers pertaining to the Inter State Migrant Workmen Act 1979 (Work Permit). Considering the suggestion made by the organisation, the SDO of Mairang Civil and officials of the Labour department have asked the company to follow the rules and regulations of the Inter State Migrant Workmen Act 1979.

Meanwhile, the KSU and HNYF Mairang Circle have also warned such contractors or companies who failed to stick to the rules laid down in the Act.
