Shillong: Police are interrogating Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) chairman Champion Sangma, who was taken into custody by state police, after he was ‘pushed back’ by Bangladesh authorities on Monday last.

According to sources, police were hopeful of getting vital information from the dreaded militant regarding the activities of the proscribed outfit.

Champion’s confessions would certainly provide important leads to various crimes committed by the outfit in the state, sources said on Saturday.

Champion was “arrested” by Meghalaya police from the Umkrem-Pyrdiwah area in East Khasi Hills along the India-Bangladesh border.

Soon after being arrested on Monday, Champion was produced in the court of chief judicial magistrate here, which remanded him in 15-day police custody.

Meanwhile, the GNLA chairman’s lawyer Sujit Dey met Champion at an undisclosed location on Saturday.

According to Dey, Champion is in good health.

“Champion Sangma is not yet convicted and accusations can be made against any one,” Dey said when asked about his course of action.

Champion, the former Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) left the State police force and floated the militant outfit Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) in 2009 which has unleashed a reign of terror in many parts of Garo Hills and certain parts of West Khasi Hills.

The policeman-turned-rebel is wanted by police for masterminding several crimes, including killings and extortion in insurgency-ravaged Garo Hills.

According to Dey, he was appointed by his family of Champion as his lawyer on Friday and he would look into the legal propositions of the case soon.
